Big Idea for 2016: Never Again Say “We Don’t Have the Budget For That” in Your Business
Pause for just a moment to think about how those 7 little words are impacting your business. Then make a decision and take action to get rid of them in 2016.
You’ll probably immediately think of all the good initiatives that are being put on hold whenever you say or hear 7 of the most limiting words in business.
- Hiring better people… how much day-in-day-out grief does that cause you and your business?
- Investing in technology, equipment, and facilities… how much further behind the competition can you afford to fall before recovery is almost impossible
- Having the funds for discretionary projects, such as market expansion, re-branding, and more… and what impact on the marketplace would you have if that was in place?
- Finally pursing the acquisition you’ve had your eye on… would that make you a more flexible, dominant force in your market space
- At last, being able to reward yourself and your people for all the hard work and effort you’ve invested.
Your Big Idea in 2016, your “man on the moon” idea needs to be finding a high-integrity and sustainable way to have all the profit you need to fund the growth you want, and eliminate “We don’t have the budget for that” from your vocabulary forever.
Think about it.
You would never START a business without a Business Plan. You would never LEAD your business without a Strategic Plan. Yet you’re likely trying to MANAGE your business without a Profit Plan. And no, I don’t mean a conventional P&L, which is reactive and provides no sense of action or momentum. I mean laying out an honest to goodness Profit Plan and following it.
There’s only one problem with that sage advice. When I speak with thousands of executives across the continent each year and I ask them what a good Profit Plan should look like, the room goes quiet before a few hardy souls mumble something along the lines of “increase revenues” and “decrease costs”. Conventional approaches to increasing revenues and cutting costs are clearly not the answer, otherwise we already would have solved this problem. There are thousands of books and consultants who will teach you how to write a Business Plan or a Strategic Plan, but we’ve never been taught how to develop a Profit Plan.
That changes today.
